What to Know About the Weather in South Dakota

Here's what you can expect from every season in this beautiful state.

In stunning South Dakota, you'll have the luxury of enjoying four distinct seasons! In the western side of the state (where Dakota Highland Estates is located), you'll find a drier climate and less precipitation than in the eastern half.

Here's what you can expect when you move to South Dakota, per the South Dakota Department of Tourism.

Spring

During this time of pasque flowers and baby animals, you'll experience mild weather, some rain, and temperatures averaging between 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and 45 degrees Fahrenheit to below freezing at night (depending on the month).

Late spring may bring with it short showers or larger thunderstorms, but the average South Dakotan packs away their winter clothing by late spring.

Summer

May to early September is the most popular time to visit South Dakota! You'll enjoy 15 to 16 hours of daylight per day. In the summer, you'll experience semi-humid weather with an average high of 90 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and lows near 60 degrees Fahrenheit at night.

Expect to wear light, breathable clothing in July and August.

Fall

Many people make foliage pilgrimages to places like Spearfish Canyon to see incredible color-changing palettes in the autumn. The weather will be mild with an average daytime high of 57 degrees Fahrenheit and a low of 44 degrees Fahrenheit.

During the day, you'll enjoy sunshine and mild temperatures, which will transition to cooler evenings. The first freeze typically occurs in October.

Winter

If you're a winter sport enthusiast, you may be most excited for winter in South Dakota. From December through early March, you can take advantage of the state's ski areas and 1,500+ miles of snowmobile trails.

Although the winters can be chilly, you'll love the ice fishing, hockey, ice skating, and other winter activities that arrive with the beautiful snow.

The last months of the year in South Dakota can alternate between dry and snowy.
